The first of the early Alleyns to properly hit its stride. Told, unusually, primarily from Alleyn's point of view, it has Alleyn's personality finally established and a thankful absence of secret societies, communists, and Nigel Bathgate. The mystery is cleverly established. Not a stand-out, but a serviceable mystery, and intriguing for its portrayal of New Zealand.
