The story itself I might have enjoyed, but the main characters and their character arc are one which I really don't enjoy. The uptight woman in denial who eventually learns to loosen up thanks to a somewhat rogueish, relaxed, boundary-pushing guy who may not be entirely honest is not generally a trope I enjoy, but I particularly disliked the two characters involved here. An intrusive writer (obviously with his own extra agenda) who insisted on calling the main character "Mellie" when he knows only the mother who abandoned her when she was seven called her that. A tight-wound real estate agent who is so traumatised by that abandonment (and her father's alcoholism) that she scarcely seems real. Hates attachment. Creates Excel spreadsheet schedules for everything. Is so horrified by the prospect of inheriting a valuable house AND THE FUNDS TO REPAIR IT that she thinks letting it fall down would be the best option. Never gardened. Never touched a dog?And that's not even getting into the ability to see ghosts.I could never like nor believe in the characters and ended up giving up on the story.
